We made our way to Wesley College to play our last match of the the round robin and hopefully get into the knockout round.
The boys got out to practice on the close cut cooch grass which the boys found interesting, and the balls ran true and fast.
We started well and kept them out of their half – made a few errors – whether it was nerves or something else… but the Wesley boys, somewhat a couple of feet taller than our boys, played their way to a goal that rocketed into the back of the net. 1 – nil down after 2 minutes.
Back to the restart, our game was losing its plan… Nevertheless Coach Hansen rang the changes to put some backbone into the attack and as a consequence we had a foray into the Wesley penalty area. Alas no goal resulted. More Wesley forays in to the Shenton half saw two more goals rocketed into the back of the net. (so far 3 – nil to Wesley).
Several more exchanges of possession ensued and a shot at goal by a Shenton striker finally put pressure on the Wesley goalkeeper, but alas no goal. In the counter attack by Wesley our boys put pressure on the midfielders but when the Wesley centremid handled the ball our boys stopped running, the ref called play on and as a consequence another shot rocketed into the net. (4 nil) After the restart Wesley forced a corner and another ball was rocketed into the back of our net. Half time – the score was 5 -nil.
At the restart Coach Hansen had reset her charges and things started to change. Was history going to be repeated (after half time Shenton A was 0- 2, and beat Wesley 6-3) but alas no. The Shenton boys played with more confidence keeping out the Wesley attacks and tackling with more purpose and as a consequence a couple of forays into the Wesley half and the Shenton boys found a few shots on goal which had the Wesley goalkeeper stretching. No goals, but against the run of play with some scrambles in front of goal found three second half goals to Wesley. Final Score was 8 – nil.
Not our best scoreline but a great effort from our boys- they did NOT give up. This group of boys is our developmental squad for 2016. More experience, more height and muscle will make them a team to be reckoned with.
Who are they? They were today – Ash Kluken (on loan from the A squad), Jonathan Huynh, Jackson Smith, Xavier Smith Tan, Jayden Lapsley Fowle, Lucien Maart, Nick Thatcher, Blake Falconer, Douglas Waite, Jibrail Kalim, Jordan Simpson, Sunil Rajan, Hawi Karaitiana, Conrad Eyers, Sanyiago Alverez and Cody Baker.
Thanks to all our boys and Collene Hansen for show casing the Shenton spirit and talent. This team has great promise.
