Year 12 – ADFA
Students who want to apply for entry in 2008 should start the process NOW if they have not already done so. It takes some time to get through the various selection procedures and if students do not start now they will not be ready for the Officer Selection Board in September. Phone 13 19 01 or apply online at www.defencejobs.gov.au/adfa .
Medicine Applications to the University of NSW
The process is much more complicated than applying to UWA. Apply in September to the NSW equivalent of TISC (UAC), but before then have to apply directly to the UNSW Faculty of Medicine. This is a twofold process:
(i) Must complete an online Registration of Interest Form NOW
(ii) Must complete and mail to UNSW a Medicine Application Form by 25 JULY
To begin this process students should go to the Faculty website: www.med.unsw.edu.au and select Apply to Undergraduate Medicine. They must then decide if they are “Local” or “Rural”
and follow the appropriate prompts. UNSW has a very large rural quota and has an academic
threshold of 90.00 for rural applicants, so this is very advantageous. Firstly, students must complete the online registration. Once they have done that, the Application Form must be downloaded, filled in and posted back. It gives students a chance to let the selectors know if they have had a significant leadership role at school, excelled at sport or the arts, or been involved in community service. This could be very advantageous for some students. They also need to be able to demonstrate that they have done some work experience in a health-related setting. The form has to be completed by the school principal as well as by the student, so I suggest getting started on it NOW. The closing date for UNSW to receive the form is 25 July. As this is inconveniently just after our July holidays, as mail to NSW is slow, and as Principals are busy people, I think it would best be done this term if students are to meet the deadline.
